Evaluating arbitrary strain configurations and doping in graphene with Raman spectroscopy

The properties of graphene depend sensitively on strain and doping affecting its behavior in devices and allowing an advanced tailoring of this material. A knowledge of the strain configuration, i.e. the relative magnitude of the components of the strain tensor, is particularly crucial, because it governs effects like band-gap opening, pseudo-magnetic fields, and induced superconductivity. It a...

Revealing anisotropic strain in exfoliated graphene by polarized Raman spectroscopy.

We report on a polarized Raman study on mechanically cleaved single-layer graphene films. Under a specific orientation of scattering measurement, the width and position of the G peak change with the incident polarization direction, while the integrated intensity of that is unaltered. This phenomenon is explained by a proposed mode in which the peak is contributed by a mixture of un-, compressiv...

Uniaxial strain on graphene: Raman spectroscopy study and band-gap opening.

Graphene was deposited on a transparent and flexible substrate, and tensile strain up to approximately 0.8% was loaded by stretching the substrate in one direction. Raman spectra of strained graphene show significant red shifts of 2D and G band (-27.8 and -14.2 cm(-1) per 1% strain, respectively) because of the elongation of the carbon-carbon bonds. This indicates that uniaxial strain has been ...

Phonon softening and crystallographic orientation of strained graphene studied by Raman spectroscopy.

We present a systematic study of the Raman spectra of optical phonons in graphene monolayers under tunable uniaxial tensile stress. Both the G and 2D bands exhibit significant red shifts. The G band splits into 2 distinct subbands (G(+), G(-)) because of the strain-induced symmetry breaking. Raman scattering from the G(+) and G(-) bands shows a distinctive polarization dependence that reflects ...

Observation of strain effect on the suspended graphene by polarized Raman spectroscopy

We report the strain effect of suspended graphene prepared by micromechanical method. Under a fixed measurement orientation of scattered light, the position of the 2D peaks changes with incident polarization directions. This phenomenon is explained by a proposed mode in which the peak is effectively contributed by an unstrained and two uniaxial-strained sub-areas. The two axes are tensile strai...
